Japanese Maples - Available from Raraflora Online
Raraflora is a specialist grower of grafted Japanese Maples. We have one of the most extensive ranges in Australia with many varieties now grown here originating through Raraflora's previous importing efforts.
The fine leaved Dissectum Japanese Maples are also listed by nurseries as Laceleaf or Weeping Japanese Maples.
Laceleaf Japanese Maples
The laceleaf, or dissectum, forms of the Japanese Maple are generally the most popular and prized of the group. They are often also listed as Weeping Japanese Maples.
Most laceleaf maples are rounded, mushroom-shaped plants with strongly cascading branches and they rarely exceed 2m in height. When viewed in winter, minus their leaves, the bare branch structure of these plants can be quite spectacular.
We graft all our Japanese Maple specimens on hardy Acer Palmatum understock. So our customers can find a rich array of different styles, colours and shapes of Japanese Mapls, while aslo being assured of the named variety and robustness of the plant chosen.
Although Laceleaf Maples' fine leaves make them appear very delicate plants, most are extremely hardy. If the plant is under stress, it will shed its leaves and re-shoot when conditions improve.
Dissectum Japanese Maples are best grown in a position with good light. Ideally they should be protected from strong winds and the root zone kept cool with mulch.
Maples have a non-invasive root system that is just below the soil surface. Cultivating or planting close to the trunk is not recommended.
Fertilizing and pruning, if needed, can be done safely in late winter.
Japanese Maples - Uprights
The Japanese Maple shrub and tree forms are highly prized garden specimens. The stunning spring display of leaves surpasses most flowering plants. Summer gives another flush of new foliage and autumns brilliant colours are superb.
These popular aristocrats of the garden come in an endless range of colour, form and size. Although giving the appearance of being delicate, most are extremely hardy and suitable for average garden conditions.
They vary in size from dwarf varieties through to medium trees and are naturally shapely growers. They are popular for bonsai, feature plantings and container plants.
Ideally Japanese maples should be protected from strong winds, planted where they will receive good light and the root zone kept cool with mulch. We graft all our Japanese maple specimens on hardy Acer Palmatum understock.
The root system is small and non invasive and disease and insect problems are virtually non-existent. If stressed through lack of water, the leaves can burn.
Older tree specimens reach around 4m-6m in Australia. Prune to size/shape in late winter if required and fertilize in early spring.
